Today’s increasingly fast-paced, hectic, lifestyle has seen the advent of various lifestyle disorders like Obesity (one of the commonest), Hypertension, Various hormonal disorders like Diabetes, Thyroid disorders, PCOS ( very common in teenage girls).

As the proverb says, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Through various research studies and experiments, there is a good evidence that having a right balance of nutrition can help prevent these illnesses.

A Balanced nutritive diet consists of a proportionate amount of Vitamins, Minerals, Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Nutrients and Water which helps in boosting one’s immune system as well as feeling healthier and energetic.

These individual food groups provide us with nutritive qualities by contributing through their unique characteristics. If consumed in equivalent proportions, it provides in maintaining a healthy equilibrium in the body.

For example, Proteins obtained from various sources like sprouts,milk, eggs, milk products, meat, fish, legumes etc help in body building and tissue repairing.

Following are a few pointers to help you stay healthy:

  1. Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Water is one of the most important elements of our body.
  2. The majority of our daily calories should be obtained from:
    1. Fresh fruits, dry fruits and nuts
    2. Raw or cooked Vegetables
    3. Whole, high fiber grains and cereals
    4. Legumes (dry beans, lentils)
    5. Milk and dairy products – yogurt, cheese
    6. lean meat, poultry, fish,eggs.
  3. Consume high fiber food, low-fat food.
  4. Use the limited and proportionate amount of cooking oil.
  5. Stay active – include any form of exercise, yoga, walk/ jog for a minimum of 35 to 45 minutes per day.
  6. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and supper like a pauper! Never Skip your Breakfast. It’s the first and most important meal of your day.
  7. Sleep 7 to 8 hours per day.
  8. Limit you Caffeine ie Tea or Coffee intake to 2 cups per day.
  9. Keep your Sugar intake in check.
  10. Avoid fad diets and slimming pills, instead, go the natural way. Nature and its products have healing properties.
