Green tea! A drink that is advised by every fitness freak around the planet is taking the world by a storm. It is definitely one of the most talked about drinks in today’s time. People have started inclining towards it because of the health benefits it offers, no matter if they have to add sugar or honey to overcome its sour taste and limit the very benefits it offered. It is widely popular for the fact that it helps people to reduce their weight. But wait! Believe it or not, green tea has a lot of side effects. It has been proved that green tea is not for everyone and that it can cause more harm than good to one’s health. Everybody is different and even the metabolism differs from one body kind to another, so what suits one person may or may not go for the other.

Keeping aside the benefits of green tea let us focus on its side effects. Are you aware that green tea contains caffeine?

The image that conjures in anybody’s mind while hearing the word caffeine is a steaming hot cup of coffee. Green tea may not have the same content as its counterpart but overconsumption of green tea (more than 4 -5 cups a day) can lead to several ailments. The most commonly known side effects of excessive intake of green tea are:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Convulsion
  • Confusion
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach upset
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Muscle tremor

There is a huge section of the world that is already suffering from some of these symptoms. A number of these symptoms are very common to many diseases. On the other hand, there are a few illnesses in which the intensity of some of these symptoms is high, and as a result, patients suffering from these health problems are advised not to consume green tea at all, since consumption of green tea would result in making health matters worse for them. These disorders are not only physical but some of them (like anxiety) are psychological, as well.

  • People who have anemia and/or bleeding disorders should avoid drinking green tea as it might increase the threat of blood loss.
  • Diabetic patients should examine their blood sugar carefully in case they are consuming green tea. However, it is well recommended that they avoid green tea to the best possible level.
  • Patients with heart diseases and high blood pressure should not consume green tea as it sometimes results in irregular heartbeat and amplifies the blood pressure for those suffering from high blood pressure.
  • Diarrhea is one of the side effects of caffeine. Therefore, people already suffering from diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome should keep away from green tea.
  • Those who have liver diseases should withdraw from drinking green tea as it is well-known that green tea makes liver diseases worse.
  • A majority of people in today’s time suffer from anxiety disorders. These include phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder (panic attacks), and social anxiety disorder. It is a serious mental disorder and people suffering from this should not consume green tea at all as it worsens the attacks and the disorder as a whole.
  • Insomniacs should entirely avoid green tea. Caffeine causes insomnia, thereby deteriorating the state of insomniacs.
  • Women who are pregnant or are at the breastfeeding stage should make sure that if they are consuming green tea, it should be in a definite and limited quantity. If consumed in excessive amounts, it can harm the health of both the mother as well as the new-born in many ways.
  • If young children are consuming green tea, their parents should make sure that they are not suffering from any of the above-mentioned diseases and they should also be very careful with the quantity of green tea that they are providing to their children.

We, humans, have a tendency of blindly following any on-going trend, be it fashion or fitness. Prevention is always a better option than cure. By this means, each one of us should be aware of what we are doing and should not carelessly follow the craze.
